2. Physical Development Principles of Growth and Development
Development proceeds from head to foot (cephalocaudal).
Development proceeds from trunk outward (proximodistol)
Development follows a sequence.
Rate of development varies

3. GROSS MOTOR SKILLS Babies enjoy being able to control their movements
Motor Skills: skills that require the movement and control of certain muscles.
HEAD TO FOOT DEVELOPMENT
Gross Motor Skills: involve use of the large muscles, such as the trunk, neck, arms and legs
Raising head and chest: 2 mos-6 mos
Rolling over: by 5 mos this is mastered
Sitting: 3-4 mos with support: 9 mos no support
Crawling: pulling with arms
Creeping: moving on hands and knees
Standing
Taking steps
Walking: 12 and 14 mos

4. FINE MOTOR SKILLS
FINE MOTOR SKILLS: the use of smaller body muscles, such as those in the hands, fingers, feet and toes.
Trunk outward development
Open hand swiping: 3mos
Mitten grasp: palm and fingers oppose thumb: 6-7mos
Pincer grasp: around 9mos babies begin to master this skill, holding objects between thumb and index finger.
Eye-Hand coordination: the ability to move hands in the direction that the eyes see (9-10mos old)
LET BABIES LEARN AT THEIR OWN PACE

5. Exploring their Bodies
Infants begin to develop positive or negative views about their bodies and body functions based on their parents reactions.
Parents need to be careful on how they react: make sure to use a sensitive, but a matter-of-fact approach.
Parents should not label touching any body parts as shameful….
NEVER use the word “nasty” or “dirty” to describe a bowel movement.
Negative labels cause the baby to feel unacceptable.

6. FEEDING
AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) suggest exclusive breast or bottle feeding for the first 6 months…
Can start to introduce solids to supplement formula or breast milk.
SEE 13-7 for foods to introduce
