Friday, December 7th, 2018 Common Core Standards: RL , RL , and W Aim: How can writing strategies help us construct a strong, Regents-style argumentative essay on The Scarlet Letter? Do Now: Choose a partner to conduct a peer edit of a section of your essay. Do both of the following tasks: 1.) Choose ONE paragraph of your peer’s essay to evaluate, using the checklist provided. 2.) Give your peer warm (strengths) and cool (suggestions for improvement) feedback. Objective: Students will be able to utilize writing strategies to construct a strong, Regents-style argumentative essay on The Scarlet Letter Show any owed homework.

Friday, December 7th, 2018 Aim: How can writing strategies help us construct a strong, Regents-style argumentative essay on The Scarlet Letter? Objective: Students will be able to utilize writing strategies to construct a strong argumentative essay on The Scarlet Letter through adherence to an outline and peer editing. Agenda A.) Do Now: Turn and talk with your tablemates. How did you critique each other in the peer editing? Captains will share with the whole class. B.) Work Period: Students will use laptops/electronic devices to continue to compose their argumentative essays. They will adhere to the outline provided. Preparation materials will also be provided for those students who would like/need additional scaffolding. Your Essay should be answering ONE of the following Essay Questions: 1.) Should Hester endure the adversity of the scarlet letter? 2.) Should Dimmesdale have faced the adversity that Hester faces (public punishment and humiliation)? 3.) Should Chillingworth be punished for the adversity he causes Dimmesdale? 4.) Should Pearl overcome the adversity of her mother’s ignominious sin? *5.) Is Hester a victim of her 17th century, Puritan society? *New Question C.) Self-Assessment/Reflections: Using the student-created grading rubric, give yourself a score and write one sentence explanation to support your score. Use the following sentence starters to guide you: I was successful because…, I need to make progress in...
