Wednesday, January 2nd, 2019 Aim: How can we identify a central idea and supportive textual evidence in A View From the Bridge? Objective: Students will be able to identify a central idea and supportive textual evidence in A View From the Bridge. Agenda A.) Do Now: Turn and talk with your tablemates. New captains will share with the whole class. B.) Work Period: Work on the HW due tomorrow. Here are the details: Compose a CENTRAL IDEA T-CHART for Act I in A View From the Bridge. On one side, include QUOTES (choose SIX; include the character speaking and the page #) from the play that support your chosen central idea (see the Central Idea Starters Handout). On the other side, include ANALYSIS (2-3 sentences for each quote) of how the author uses a chosen literary element/technique (characterization (the easiest one!), conflict, metaphor, simile, setting, symbolism or tone) to develop that central idea. AN EXEMPLARY QUOTE, INTRODUCTION TO THE QUOTE AND ANALYSIS OF THE QUOTE CAN BE FOUND BELOW: Alfieri stated in his soliloquy, "But this is Red Hook, not Sicily. This is the slum...this is the gullet of New York" (p. 4). Readers can infer that Alfieri is characterized as an omniscient (all-knowing) lawyer who has insider knowledge about the setting of this play and the background of the characters. He appears to be the informant about the struggles of people living in poor conditions (central idea), and provides this information to the audience. C.) Q & A/Reflections: What are you struggling with in the homework? What do you need to accomplish tonight? Are you going to attend after-school tutoring/regents prep?
