5 United Nations April 25, 1945 Organization meant to establish peace in the world. 50 nations joined the UN. US and SU used it to compete with one another.

To agree on how to deal with conquered land Stalin promised free elections in Eastern European countries during the Yalta Conference. (Lie!)

Soviets felt they could stop invasions from the West by occupying E. Europe Satellite Nations – countries dominated by the Soviet Union Stalin established communism in satellite nations.

Stalin said communism and democracy were incompatible. He felt another war was inevitable

10 Containment Faced with the Soviet threat, Truman decided it was time to ‘stop babying the Soviets’ American policy of Containment Containment – taking measures to stop the expansion of communism in other countries.
