Why do we have government? How are governments organized?

4 Monarchy In a Monarchy, a King or Queen holds power and these leaders inherent power from a family line, heredity or it can be inherited. During the King or Queen’s reign, they have the absolute power. Titles can include: King, Queen, Prince, Princess Types of Monarchies: Absolute Monarchy Constitutional Monarchy

5 Democracy In a Democracy, a elected Leader holds the power, and the leaders come into power by the people of that area vote to elect him or her. (town, city, county, state, country) The elected leader has no absolute power, the people have the power. In a Democracy, citizens (Individuals) have rights and freedoms guaranteed to them. Titles include: President Prime Minister

6 Democracy When citizens are unhappy with a leader in a democracy they can vote to elect a new leader. A Leader holds a term for a certain time before citizens can reelect a leader or vote in a new one.

7 Dictatorship In a dictatorship, a Dictator holds the power and this leader in power can come into power through force or family (inheritance). These leaders have absolute power to make decisions. Individuals are NOT guaranteed rights and freedoms under a dictatorship government. Titles include: Dictator

8 Dictatorship In this form of government, the Dictator has the authority to punish its citizens for dissent or opposing their leadership or questioning it and can be forced into silence through various ways. House Arrest Jail Exile or Banishment from country Death

10 Theocracy In a Theocracy government, God is head of state, and Leaders claim divine right or guidance from God. In a Theocracy, the leader’s absolute power depends on the leader. Leaders are guided by God and ruled by their religious beliefs. Examples of Theocracy: Tibet (Dali Lama) Vatican City (Pope)

11 Republic In a Republic, the people hold the power.
People vote for a representative In a Republic, the voters have the power, and those voted into power are also legislative duty’s as well. Republics first started in Rome. 509 BC

12 Republic Titles include: President Types of Republics Federal Republic
Unitary Republic
