2 Queen Elizabeth Died in 1603. End of the Tudor Dynasty
Passed to the Stuart Dynasty

3 James I Divine Right-Received his power from God and was responsible only to God. Did not work well with Parliament

4 Charles I Petition of Rights-1628-Limits on Kings power, could not raise taxes or imprison people without cause. He accepted the petition and then ignored it.

5 English Civil War 1642-1649 Cavaliers-Royalist-Supporters of the King
Roundheads-Supporters of Parliament, Leader Oliver Cromwell Roundsheads won and executed Charles I

6 Oliver Cromwell Military Dictatorship
He started out ruling England as a “Commonweath” (Republic) Changed to Military Dictatorship with strict rules and exiled most Catholics. Died in 1658 People were tired of the military dictatorship and invited Charles II back to England. Charles II was popular and allowed religious toleration. He was Catholic but hid it.

7 James II 1685 Flaunted his Catholic faith
Protestants feared he would restore the Catholic Church

8 Glorious Revolution 1688-Parliament leaders invited James Protestant daughter Mary and William of Orange to become rulers of England. James II fled to France-Bloodless Overthrow

9 English Bill of Rights Ensure the superiority of Parliament over the monarchy-(limited/Constitutional Monarchy) 1. no Catholic could be King or Queen 2. Trial by Jury 3. Cruel or unjust punishment 4. Habeas corpus
