3  Divine Right-Received his power from God and was responsible only to God.  Did not work well with Parliament

4  Petition of Rights-1628-Limits on Kings power, could not raise taxes or imprison people with cause.  He accepted the petition and then ignored it.

5  Cavaliers-Royalist-Supporters of the King  Roundheads-Supporters of Parliament, Leader Oliver Cromwell  Roundsheads won and executed Charles I

6  He started out ruling England as a “Commonweath” (Republic)  Changed to Military Dictatorship with strict rules and exiled most Catholics.  Died in 1658  People were tired of the military dictatorship and invited Charles II back to England.  Charles II was popular and allowed religious toleration. He was Catholic but hid it.

7  Flaunted his Catholic faith  Protestants feared he would restore the Catholic Church

8  1688-Parliament leaders invited James Protestant daughter Mary and William of Orange to become rulers of England.  James II fled to France-Bloodless Overthrow

9  Ensure the superiority of Parliament over the monarchy-(limited/Constitutional Monarchy)  1. no Catholic could be King or Queen  2. Trial by Jury  3. Cruel or unjust punishment  4. Habeas corpus
