The Mule was a spinning machine so called because it combined the meits of the spinning jenny ( a moveable carriage) and the water Frames (roller to draw out the yarn). The mule never patented, was in use by It was hand powered and because it required considerable strength tto draw back the carraige, it was operated mostly by men. 21 The Rocket- 1829 George Stephenson’s famous “Rocket” of The era of the railroad began, in 1830 with the opening of the line from Liverppol to Manchester. Before the line opened the company held a contest to decide the best means of conveyance to be used, and to demonstrate the safety of the new invention. Stephenson’s Rocket competed against two other steam locomotives and won, covering the course at an average speed of about 15 mph. The Rocket also set the pattern for future locomotive design with at tubular-shaped boiler and direct drive between piston and wheels. 21
