2 Turn of the Century 1900- The United States is a world power.
McKinley is assassinated in 1901. Theodore Roosevelt becomes president.

3 History of the Panama Canal
Belonged to Columbia France had rights to build the canal but were unsuccessful so they gave them up. U.S. bought the rights to build for $40 million.

4 Importance of the Panama Canal
1. Shipping becomes faster and cheaper U.S. Navy can move faster from Pacific to Atlantic in times of war.

5 Panama Canal Timeline November 1903: Columbia would not give in to the U.S. so Roosevelt sent in warships to support the “Panamanian Revolution”. U.S. pays the “new” Panama $10 million for sovereignty of the canal. “Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far.”-Teddy Roosevelt

6 Panama Canal Timeline 1904 Canal begins to be built.
1914 Canal completed

7 Out Comes of the Panama Canal
1.Ill feelings towards the U.S. grew in South America because of how the U.S. acquired the canal. 2. The last item in Mahan’s list to becoming a world power. U.S. pays Columbia $25 million.

8 Roosevelt Corollary (in addition to Monroe Doctrine)
The U.S. is the police of the Western Hemisphere. We will intervene in countries to prevent European countries from intervening. Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic) goes bankrupt. U.S. takes over their finances to prevent European intervention to collect debts. How do you think S. American countries feel about the U.S. now?

9 Roosevelt as a Peacemaker
Roosevelt negotiates an end to the Russo-Japanese war. He wins the Nobel Peace Prize. He enters the U.S. into the Gentlemen's Agreement with Japan.

10 William Howard Taft Dollar Diplomacy- Increase American investments in foreign economies. Some Latin American countries resent this involvement.

11 Woodrow Wilson Moral Diplomacy-also known as Missionary Diplomacy
Refuses to recognize governments that come into power using immoral or corrupt means or by force.

12 Wilson & the Mexican Revolution 1911
Porfirio Diaz forced to resign-he supported American business owners which many Mexicans were resenting. Francisco Madero promised democratic reform but it did not happen.

13 Mexican Revolution 1911 General Victoriano Huerta “butcher” kills Madero and takes control of the Mexican govt. Wilson refuses to recognize Huerta because he came into power by force.-Missionary Diplomacy Venustiano Carranza fights Huerta and wins. He restored American business. He was supported by the U.S. against Huerta.

14 Francisco “Pancho” Villa
A rebel who opposes Carranza. He raids towns and kills residents in Arizona and New Mexico in response to Wilson’s support of Carranza.

15 General John J. “Black Jack” Pershing
Sent into Mexico by Wilson to pursue Villa, but he does not capture him. His army clashed with the Mexican army in bloody battles.

16 Outcomes of Our Involvement in Mexico
Wilson withdraws U.S. troops in 1917. Mexico curbs foreign ownership of its resources. “Moral Diplomacy” was not successful in Mexico. Bad feelings between the US and Mexico exist.
