Makes France 4x larger by granting new charters Collected a national tax Appointed middle class men to councils instead of nobles Louis IX 1226 Very religious Persecuted Jews, Muslims, heretics. Becomes a saint Outlawed private wars and ended serfdom Unified France

5 Philip IV 1268 Estates General To gain more power, he taxed the clergy
Philip threatened to arrest clergymen who didn’t pay taxes The Pope did NOT approve, Philip tried to capture him but the Pope died France elected their own Pope, Clement V of Avignon, who fought over the position with the Pope elected in Rome To gain the support of the French people, Philip creates the Estates General Estates General Similar to what in England? Represented clergy, nobles, and townspeople Did not balance power as anticipated
