2 Trade 1000 – 1500 A.D. Trade routes were increasing because of technology and the peaceful cooperation between cultures, civilizations and countries across the Eastern World. As a result you could get almost anything from anywhere in the world.

3 Europe The Late Medieval period in Europe gave rise to the reintroduction to old Greco-Roman ideas and goods from around the world due to the… Crusades, Fall of Feudalism, Rise of Middle Class. Europe was linked together and to Asia and Africa through roads and water trade routes. Rivers that emptied into the Seas that connected them to the rest of the world. Easier to trade by water.

4 Africa Africa is/was rich in many ways
Natural Resources Western Africa (Particularly Ghana) was blessed with a large gold reserves, which they traded for other goods they needed. Salt v. Gold – Salt was used to preserve food (no refrigerators) and was worth its weight in gold. Islam was spread along the northern portion of Africa along the trade routes.

5 Africa Axum – Located in the Highlands just south of Egypt.
Zimbabwe – Located in the southern portion of Africa along the Indian Ocean. West Africa – Ghana Mali and Songhai. Had lots of gold. Timbuktu was their center for trade and learning.

6 Asia “Countries” like China, Korea, Japan and India were on the rise during this time period. They received lots of wealth from trading. They also were technologically advanced and invented lots of modern conveniences. Chinese – Paper, gunpowder, compass.

7 Asia As goods were spread, so were ideas. Religions were spreading throughout Asia from country to country. Buddhism from China to Korea and Japan. Shinto ethnic religion of Japan. Exclusively Japanese. Works together with Buddhism. Shinto Wedding Buddhist Funeral

8 Japan Island nation that had influence from outside places, but tried to keep its autonomy. Written language from China Made up of four large volcanic islands. Had a feudal system similar to what was in Europe with a ruling Emperor. Warrior class - Samurai
