2 Main Idea Infants are born equipped to experience the world.
As infants grow physically, they also develop cognitive skills, perceptions, and language.

3 Review Term Developmental Psychology – the specialized study of how an individual’s physical, social, emotional, moral, and intellectual development occur throughout the life cycle.

4 Newborns At birth, can see, hear, smell, and respond to the environment. Newborns are capable of certain, “automatic” responses called REFLEXES. Grasping Reflex – a response to a touch on the palm Rooting Reflex – if touched anywhere around the mouth, the new born will move his/her head toward the source of the touch (mainly used for nursing).

5 Physical Development Infants weigh 7.3 lbs on average at birth.
95% weigh between 5.5 and 10 pounds and are between inches long.

6 Maturation The internally programmed growth of a child.
Most infants can walk by 12 months, but it can range from 9-18 months. Most infants can talk by 2 ½ These things occur naturally and cannot be coached.

7 Language Language and thought are closely connected.
By the time children are two, they have a vocabulary of 500-1,500 words. At 2, children use telegraphic speech. “where my apple?” “Daddy fall down.” Words are left out, but the meaning is clear.
