2 What is (or isn’t) a state?
All states must have: Population Territory Sovereignty Government Must have control of internal and external affairs supreme power or authority. the authority of a state to govern itself or another state. a self-governing state Countries and nations are all considered state Lead into 4 types of government

3 What are the basic forms of government?
1. Democracy: elected representatives hold political power Example: United States 2. Monarchy: ruling family with king or queen that may share power Example: United Kingdom or Saudi Arabia 3. Dictatorship: individual holds all political power Example: North Korea or Afghanistan 4. Communist: government holds all power, economic and political Example: Cuba The Communist Party of Cuba (Spanish: Partido Comunista de Cuba, PCC) is the only political party permitted to rule in the Republic of Cuba, although others exist. It is a communist party of the Marxist-Leninist model.

4 What is urban geography?
How space is used in cities Suburbs: borders of the city City and suburbs combined make the metropolitan area Cities are located based on transportation and natural resources

5 What is economic geography?
Production and exchange of goods Traditional: bartering, no money is used Command: government controlled, called planned economy Market: demand of consumers, also called capitalism

6 What are natural resources?
Materials on or in the earth that hold value Renewable: can be replaced Example: Trees and seafood Nonrenewable: cannot be replaced once removed Example: Metals, fossil fuels, coal, and natural gas

7 How do states develop? Infrastructure: basic support systems to keep economy going Example: Transportation, water, sanitation, and education GDP: (Gross Domestic Product)- total value of all goods and services produced within a country during a year
