6 Consequences of the French and Indian War
After the war, the British government needed a way to pay for and defend their new colonies They decided to prevent settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains They also decided to tax the American Colonists. They created courts with no juries and where the accused were treated as guilty until proven innocent The colonists responded to these new laws by protesting and boycotting British goods. Consequences of the French and Indian War

8 Sugar Act – put a tax on molasses and sugar imported by the colonists
This was intended to help pay for the army that the British had stationed in the colonies The British also cracked down on smuggling Sugar Act

14 Stamp Act of 1765 – This act required colonists to pay for an official stamp, or seal, when they bought paper items Colonists began to protest this because they saw it as a direct tax as opposed to a tax on imported goods. The colonists also argued that this was taxation without representation. Parliament (the house of representatives in the British government that made the laws, especially taxes) eventually repealed this tax Stamp act of 1765

24 Townshend Acts – these acts places taxes on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea
These laws also gave the British more authority to search for smuggling and seize the property without warrants. The colonists responded with protests. This caused a riot to break out in Boston The British responded with sending troops to restore order. The presence of troops led to more fights and eventually the Boston Massacre Townshend ACts

26 Tea Act – allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonists.
This made colonial merchants afraid that the cheap tea from the British East India Company would drive them out of business. Colonists responded with the Boston Tea Party Tea aCt

29 Intolerable Acts – a number of new laws passed in the Spring of 1774 to punish the city of Boston for the Boston Tea Party Quartering Act – required colonists to house British soldiers in their homes Quebec Act – gave a large amount of land from Massachusetts to the colony of Quebec. These were in response to the Boston Tea Party They made the colonists even more angry Intolerable ACts

Cancelled the Massachusetts's charter Sent royal officials accused of a crime to Britain for trial letting them face a more friendly judge and jury Required British troops to be allowed into the colonists’ homes Gave land to Quebec General Thomas Gage became the new governor of Massachusetts. You are going to create a protest for one of the British Acts Each person in the group will have a role Leader: Help everyone with their task and make sure the project is completed in time for the rally Graphic Artist: Create a poster to demonstrate your outrage towards the your assigned act. Public Relations Expert: Do research on the your assigned act using the book. You may also use your phone (you are to be the only person with a phone out) Public Relations Writer: Write a three sentence statement for the public on why you are protesting your assigned act. Include information about having no representation in Parliament. Volunteer Activist: Help everyone else in the group complete their duties. Protest
