5 TOWNSHEND ACTS The ‘Liberty’ Ship  John Hancock: Ship Owner. BritishColonist (John Hancock) British tax collectors seized the ship, suspecting smuggling. GB Seized his ship, because he was against the Townshend Act. 10 A TAX ON TEA REACTION TO THE BOSTON MASSACRE (Eliminated most of Townshend Act, except for tax on tea.) Tea Act: Allowed the British East India Company to sell its low-cost tea directly to the colonies, undermining colonial tea merchants

12 The Boston Tea Party Colonist Reaction To Tea ACT British Response To the Boston Tea Party Boycotted the British Tea Destroyed tea shipments Boston Tea Party British Parliament passed the Coercive Acts (Intolerable Acts)

13 Intolerable Acts 1. Boston Harbor was closed until Boston Paid for the lost tea 2. The Massachusetts charter was canceled. The governor decided if and when the legislature could meet. 3. Royal officials accused of crimes were sent to Britain for trial. This let them face a more friendly judge and jury. 4. The Quartering Act forced colonist to quarter, or house and supply, British Soldiers. 5. Thomas Gage, became the new governor of Massachusetts.
