Reasons for Taxation The French and Indian war had been very costly for Great Britain and they had bills to pay. They had to keep a standing army in North America to protect the colonists from Indian attacks and to enforce the Proclamation of 1763. In 1764 the British Parliament passed the Sugar Act which was the first tax in the colonies. The British also began cracking down on smugglers.

Taxation without Representation The colonists had no representatives in Parliament so they felt Parliament had not right to tax them without their consent. The slogan “No Taxation without Representation” was coined by James Otis and Samuel Adams. Adams set up the Committees of Correspondence so that colonies could discuss their views on the new taxes. Colonists began boycotting British merchants.

More Taxes Stamp Act of 1765 taxed all paper documents. The Townshend Acts of 1767 placed duties on glass, lead, paints, paper, and tea. The Sons and Daughters of Liberty were formed to oppose these acts.

The Boston Massacre March 5, 1770 British troops fire on a group of civilians. Samuel Adams and Paul Revere quickly spread the news as propaganda. The British soldiers were put on trial and found not guilty.

The Boston Tea Party The Tea Act allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonists. Colonists went aboard the tea ships at night and dumped 340 chests into Boston Harbor.

Patriots vs. Loyalists Speech Write two short persuasive speeches. One from the perspective of a Patriot who is calling on people to resist the tax laws, and one from the Loyalist perspective calling on colonists to support the British crown. Use persuasive language and facts to back up both arguments.
