2 Sugar Act (1764) Lowered taxes on imported molasses Officers could seize goods from smugglers and not go to court Parliament put tax in place to stop smuggling Colonists unhappy; believed rights were being violated

3 Stamp Act (1765) Tax stamp Placed a tax on printed materials in the colonies All printed materials had to have a stamp Colonists were taxed without consent This act convinced colonists they needed to take action Colonists protested in various ways causing the Stamp Act to be repealed (cancelled)

4 Declaratory Act (1766) Parliament had the right to tax and make decisions for British colonies in all cases Passed the same day the Stamp Act was repealed as punishment for protests

5 Tea Act (1773) British East India Company was given right to ship tea without paying taxes; could sell tea directly to shopkeepers Company was cheaper than colonial merchants Colonists participated in a large protest that became known as the Boston Tea Party

6 Intolerable Acts (1774) Coercive Act – closed Boston Harbor until colonists paid for tea; banned town meetings in Boston ◦Punishment for the Boston Tea Party Quartering Act – Colonists were forced to shelter British troops in homes Summary Question: Which British Act would you have disagreed with the most if you were a colonist during this time?
