DEFINITION- INFANCY is the period from 1 month to 1 year of age .

GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT- 1 MONTH-
PHYSICAL GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT- Weight-4.4 +_ 0.8 kg. Length -53 +_ 2.5 cm.. Head Circumference-Increases about 1.5 cm a month during first 6 month. Pulse – 130 +_ 20 Respiration- 35 +_ 10 Blood Pressure – 80/ 50 +_50

MOTOR DEVELOPMENT:- GROSS MOTOR DEVELOPMENT
Less in flexed position, when pelvis is elevated but knees are not beneath abdomen as they after birth . Head lags when baby pulled from supine to sitting position . May lift head periodically when held over adult shoulder or placed in prone position . Cervical curve begins to develop as infant leads to hold head erect . Turns head to the side when prone.

FINE MOTOR DEVELOPMENT
Hold hands in tight fist . Can grasp an object placed in the hand but drops it immediately.

SENSORY DEVELOPMENT:-
Attentive to speech of others . Indefinite stare at surroundings . Fixates to an object brought in front of eye . Notices faces especially and bright objects but only if they are in the line of vision. Protective blinking in response to bright light Follows a bright object to the midline of vision if 6to 8 inches from eyes.

PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT- Beginning development of the sense of trust . Totally egocentric . Complete dependence on caregivers , usually mother. Bonding progresses. Shows regard for mothers face . Hold , touch and rock infant gently. Talk and sing softly to infant at close range . Encourage mutual eye contact . Provide pacifier for sucking pleasure . Place cradle gym or crib mobile within infant’s reach . Place large bright pictures on crib or wall.

Posterior fontanels closed at 6 to 8 wks of age. MOTOR DEVELOPMENT:- GROSS MOTOR DEVELOPMENT- Less fixed prone position . Less head lag when pulled from a supine to a sitting position. Lifts head almost 45 degree above a flat surface when lying prone. Holds head erect when held upright. Turns from side to back.

SENSORY DEVELOPMENT:-
Turns head to side when a sound occurs at ear level. When on back, follows a dangling object or a moving light beyond the mid line of vision. Eyes follows moving person near by.

PSYCHOSOCIAL, PSYCHOSEXUAL AND SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT PSYCHOSOCIAL DEVELOPMENT:-
Sense of trust Distinguishes mother or primary caregiver . Eye to eye contact, enface orientation, smiling and vocalization are the evidences of attachment between infant and parent. Smile back in response to another’s smile. This is the beginning of social behavior. Has learned that crying brings attention.

Cry patterns develop. Crying becomes differentiated, varying with the reason for crying Ex- hunger, sleepiness or pain – pitch and intensity vary. Responds vocally to caregiver voice : “ah” , “eh” , “uh”. Coos.

Offer a rattle, pull from supine to sitting position. Hold as dangle toy in front of infant to encourage eye movement. Change patterns of object from bright and shiny to dull and dark for further stimulation. Place in vertical infant seal so that environment can be viewed from a different angle. Outings in carriage or car if not done earlier.

Twins head to and look’s in same direction to locate sound. When on back turns eyes to a dangling object or a moving light to marginal field of vision (180 degree). Binocular coordination (vertical and horizontal vision) when an object is moved from right to left and up and down in front of face. Regards toy dangled in midline of chest of promptly.

Drools between 3-4 month of age , indicating increased production of saliva .Unable to swallow it , therefore it runs from mouth . Reflexes- Tonic Neck, Motor , Sucking ,Rooting (when awake )reflex absent. Extrusion reflex fading (3-4 month)

May sit by falling down from standing position. Sits steadily for indefinite period of time .Does want to lie down unless sleepy . Creeps well. Pulls to standing position well , holding the crib rail or other support .

12 MONTH:- PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT :-
PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT :- Weight -10+_ 15 kg (22+_3 pounds )has tripled with weight . Length _3 cm(29+_1.5 inches) . Head circumference – 46 cm (18 inches )head circumference has increased by one –third since birth . Brain weight has increased rapidly since birth.

MOTOR DEVELOPMENT :- GROSS MOTOR :- Stands alone for variable length of time . Sits down from standing position alone . Walks in few steps with help or alone(hands held at shoulder height for balance

FINE MOTOR:- Good pincer grasp.
Picks up small bits of food and transfers them to mouth. Enjoys eating with finger. Attempts to put a small pellet into a narrow-necked bottle but does not succeed. Turns pages in a book but usually not one at a time . Drinks from a cup and eats from a spoon but still requires some help .

SENSORY DEVELOPMENT:-
Listens for recurring sounds . Full binocular vision well established . Amblyopia may develop with eyes . PSYCHOSOCIAL , PSYCHOSEXUAL , SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT:- PSYCHOSOCIAL:- Sense of trust theoretically achieved .If not a sense of mistrust predominates. Infants emotion such as fear , jealousy ,, anger can be more clearly interpreted . Attachment develop to primary caregiver . Clings to caregivers , usually mother when fearful .

PSYCHOSEXUAL :- Oral stage (0-1 year) INTELLECTUAL , MORAL DEVELOPMENT :- INTELLECTUAL:- Sensory motor stage (stage 4 ) Coordination of secondary schemas (8-12 month) Has learned that objects continue to exist even when out of sight (object permanence). Beginning perception of cause and effect relationship . Early beginning of anticipatory and intentional behavior .

MORAL:- Pre-conventional Morality (0-2 year). LANGUAGE ,SPEECH DEVELOPMENT:- RECEPTIVE LANGUAGE:- Responds with gestures or actions to more complex verbal request , such as – “Please give it me”. EXPRESSIVE LANGUAGE :- May speak two or more words besides “ma-ma” , “da- da” . Understand meaning of many more words that can be spoken . Knows names of increasing no. of objects . Infants sounds animal make . Vocalization decreases as walking increases .

PLAY STIMULATION:- (Same as 8, 9, 10 and 11month)
Provide large crayons for drawing. Provide stacking disc or blocks. Provide infant in walker several times a day to encourage walking movements. Provide push and pull toys to encourage walking.
