2 Culture: Includes many aspects of life, such as language and religion
Everything in your day to day life is part of your culture. Clothes you wear Music you listen to Food you eat Language you speak Traditions

5 1. Social Organization We group into smaller units
Family (most important unit of social organization) Nuclear: Dad, mom, and siblings Extended: Aunts, uncles, grandparents Through family children learn how they are expected to act and what to believe. Social Class Money Jobs Education Ancestry

6 2. Language Language is the cornerstone of culture.
It’s how we communicate with others. All cultures have some form of communication Many societies include large number of people who speak different languages.

7 3. Arts and Literature They are products of the human imagination.
They help us pass on culture’s basic beliefs. Examples: Art, Music, Literature, Folktales

8 4. Customs and Traditions
Rules of Behavior Eye Contact, holding door for others, dressing up to go out, and etc. They are enforced ideas of right and wrong. They can be customs, traditions, rules, or written laws.

9 5. Government People form governments to provide for their common needs, keep order, and protection. Republic Direct Democracy Dictatorship Monarchy

10 6. Religion Answers the basic questions about the meaning of life.
Religion is often a source of conflict between cultures. Polytheism: Belief in many gods Monotheism: Belief in one god Atheism: Belief in no god

11 7. Economic Systems How people use limited resources to satisfy their wants and needs. Market Economy: buying and selling goods and services Command Economy: Government controls what/how goods are produced and what they cost Mixed: Individuals make some economic decisions and the government makes others. 12 All Societies Share Certain Cultural Features.
They all have some kind of government They all educate their children in some way. They all create some type of art and music.

However, Not all societies practice their culture in the same way.

14 Define Culture Traits An activity or behavior in which people often take part. The language you speak and the sports you play are some of your culture traits.

15 Another Culture Trait: How People Eat……..
In China most people use chopsticks. In Europe and the United States people use forks and spoons. In Ethiopia, many people use bread or their fingers to scoop their food.

16 How Do Cultures Develop?
Learned or passed down from one generation to the next. (Ex. Traditions, Food, Holiday customs) Law or moral codes (Many laws in the United States can be traced back to England) Immigration (They start to learn the language and eat the food of the adopted country) Historical Events (Ex. The religion and language changed in much of Central and South America after the Spanish conquered.) Environment (Ex. People in Africa’s Sahara herd animals for a living rather than grow crops)

17 Culture Groups Earth is home to thousands of different cultures.
People who share similar culture traits are members of the same culture group. Culture groups can be based on a variety of factors, such as age, language or religion. American teenagers, for example, can be said to form a culture group based on location and age.

22 Ethnic Group is …. A group of people who share a common culture and ancestry

23 Cultural Diversity means…
The state of having a variety of cultures in the same area. More than 100 different ethnic groups live in the East African country of Tanzania. Therefore, that country is culturally diverse. Cultural diversity creates and interesting mix of ideas, behaviors and practices. It can also lead to conflict (Ex. French Canadians want to separate from the rest of Canada to preserve their language and culture.) Another example is conflict in Rwanda.

24 How Cultures Change…. Cultures change constantly.
Some rapidly and others over time. What causes Cultures to change? 1. Innovation (New ideas or technology) When Bell invented the telephone it changed how people communicate. Motion Pictures changed how people spent their free time. Internet changed how people find information and shop. 2. Contact with other people

25 Culture Diffusion is…. The spread of culture traits form one region to another. A new slang word might spread from one teen to another. Clothing styles from Paris make their way to New York. The game of baseball first began in New York, then spread throughout the United States. Blue jeans originated in the American West. My Crib=My House
