6 Food prices were high. Cities, towns, and homes were destroyed Starvation because of food prices and farms had been destroyed. Debt rose No Money, Confederate money was worthless. Communication and transportation destroyed. Widespread crop failure.

8 Supported by Abraham Lincoln Details of the Plan 1. Southerners had to swear oath of loyalty 2. Southerners had to agree that slavery was illegal Once 10 % of voters did this they could form a new government.

9 Majority of males HAVE to take the loyalty oath. They had to ban slavery.

10 Ways the two plans are similar In both plans Southerners had to take a loyalty oath. Wade Davis made the Majority take the oath not just 10 % Wade Davis had to BAN slavery, not just agree it was illegal. Ways the two plans are different

His Vice President Andrew Johnson took office. 1.Pardoned wealthy southerners and former Confederate officials 2.Appointed a temporary governor/government 3.States had to revise constitutions 4.Elect state and federal officials 5.Declare secession illegal 6.Ratify 13th Amendment 7.Refuse to pay Confederate debts

13 Describe how Civil Rights Act became a law. Andrew Johnson Vetoed this bill but Congress overrode his veto. What is the Civil Rights Act? This provided African Americans the same legal rights as whites

15 Republicans controlled Congress and took control of Reconstruction Reconstruction Acts Passed in 1867. Details Congress created 5 southern military districts States would be readmitted after they did two things 1.Write a new state constitution supporting the 14th amendment 2.Give African-American men the right to vote

16 Describe the Process of Impeachment Step 1: The House of Representatives has to vote to impeach… to bring charges against an elected official. Step 2: The Senate then has a trial and 2/3 majority has to find him guilty to remove him from office.

17 Andrew Johnson removed a Cabinet official… breaking a law. He was impeached but not found guilty by one vote shy of the 2/3 majority.

18 13th Amendment Passed December 18, 1865 Proposed by President Lincoln January 31, 1865 This amendment makes slavery illegal. What did this amendment officially do?

19 They could legally marry. They could search for relatives. Women could work at home instead of the fields. Could legally adopt children. Travel without pass. Placed news ads looking for family.

20 14 th Amendment Proposed Summer (July) 1866 1.Defined all born in the US (except Native Americans) as citizens 2.Granted citizens equal protection of the laws 3.States could not deprive any person of life, liberty, property without due process. 4.Banned many former Confederate officials from holding office. 5.Made state laws subject to court review. 6.Gave Congress the power to pass any laws needed to enforce it What were 6 Provisions of the 14 th amendment

21 15 th Amendment Went in to effect in 1870 Gave African-American men the right to vote What did it Officially do?

23 Right after U.S. General Grant became president, how did governments change in the South? Republicans had the power, controlled southern governments. White southerners did not like the Republican officeholders. African-Americans will be elected to some officeholders.

24 Some parts of southern economy improved. African-Americans were elected to office.

25 The sharecropping system which ended up being like slavery for African-Americans. Southern whites were angry and took out their anger on African- Americans. The formation of the KKK.

26 Poll tax, Literacy test, Grandfather clause ---- they reversed the 15th amendment giving African-American men the right to vote. Jim Crow laws --- reversed the 14th amendment (civil rights) took away basic rights of African-Americans
