2. You are now employed by the US Department of Health. Since the development of the birth control pill, cases of STDs have increased in number. How has this impacted our public health? Explain what steps public health agencies can take to prevent further spread of STD’s in the US.

3. If you were a parent… Would you expect your child/ teenager to tell you that he or she has contracted an STD? Why or Why Not? How would you feel about your teenager receiving treatment without your permission? What would be important information to share with them? Write a letter to your child informing them of the risk of STD’s, and what you would want them to do if they found out they had one.

4. Here a thought to ponder… Some say that those who are sexually active before marriage have poor self esteem. Is this a fair statement? Explain.

5. Chance to boost your grade…Extra Credit Time!!! Testing for a sexually transmitted disease is sometimes accomplished by blood tests. The blood may be drawn by a doctor or nurse, but sometimes it is drawn by a specialist called a phlebotomists. A phlebotomist needs training from a doctor, university, or trade school. Many phlebotomists are already lab technicians or nurses. However, some training programs are available without a college degree. For EC call doctors, teaching hospitals, and medical trade schools in the area to find out what qualifications are needed to be accepted for training. Employers vary in their requirements, so you should call hospitals, doctors, and laboratories in the areas to find out what they require of phlebotomist they employ.

6. Research 1900s Venereal Disease. Research the federal, state, and local health departments in the early decades of the 1900s to the epidemic of what was then called venereal disease. B) Which STD, if left untreated can affect the brain? Divide the STDs in this chapter into two lists- one for STDs that can be cured, if immediate treatment is sought, the other for STDs that cannot be cured. Describe treatment for each.

Recent studies indicate that 20-30 %of those who carry HIV develop AIDS within five years, and 35-40% within 8 years. Questions

12. What is AIDS? What is the function of T-helper cells? Explain the ways HIV is known to be transmitted. Do you think it is wrong for an individual who is infected with HIV to remain silent about her or his condition while being sexually active with another person?
