Genital HPV 20 Million Americans Infected 50% of all adults will be infected with HPV More than 40 Types of viruses Can cause: Genital Warts Warts in the throat Cervical Cancer, but also vulva, vagina, penis, anus, and oropharynx.
Chlamydia Chlamydia is the most commonly reported STD in the United States. It is a bacteria. Sexually active females 25 years old and younger need testing every year. Easy to cure, Chlamydia can impact a woman’s ability to have children if left untreated. 2.8 million infections each year in the US
Gonorrhea Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by a bacterium. Gonorrhea can be cured with the right treatment CDC estimates that, annually, more than 700,000 people in the United States get new gonorrhea infections Untreated gonorrhea can increase a person’s risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV—the virus that causes AIDS.
Herpes Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by the herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2). Genital herpes infection is common in the United States. Nationwide, 16.2%, or about one out of six, people aged 14 to 49 years have genital HSV-2 infection. There is no treatment that can cure herpes. Antiviral medications can, however, prevent or shorten outbreaks during the period of time the person takes the medication.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) refers to infection of the uterus, fallopian tubes and other reproductive organs It is estimated that more than 750,000 women experience an episode of acute PID. Up to 10-15% of these women may become infertile as a result of PID. PID can be cured with several types of antibiotics. A health care provider will determine and prescribe the best therapy. However, antibiotic treatment does not reverse any damage that has already occurred to the reproductive organs. If a woman has pelvic pain and other symptoms of PID, it is critical that she seek care immediately.
Syphilis Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by a bacterium. Syphilis can cause long-term complications and/or death if not adequately treated. During 2010, there were 45,834 new cases of syphilis No home remedies or over-the-counter drugs will cure syphilis, but syphilis is simple to cure with appropriate antibiotics from a physician. Treatment will kill the syphilis bacterium and prevent further damage, but it will not repair damage already done.
Trichomiasis Trichomoniasis (or “trich”) is a very common sexually transmitted diseasethat is caused by infection with a protozoan parasite. In the United States, an estimated 3.7 million people have the infection, but only about 30% develop any symptoms of trichomoniasis. Trichomoniasis can be cured with a single dose of prescription antibiotic medication (either metronidazole or tinidazole), pills which can be taken by mouth.
HIV HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus. It is the virus that can lead to acquired immune deficiency syndrome, or AIDS.) In 2007, there were 35,962 cases of AIDS AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection, when a person’s immune system is severely damaged and has difficulty fighting diseases and certain cancers. Before the development of certain medications, people with HIV could progress to AIDS in just a few years.
