3 1 st Permanent European Settlement in New World St. Augustine, Florida Founded by Ponce de Leon Spanish Settlement, founded 1565

4 Roanoke / Jamestown Roanoke Island – OBX – NC Sir Walter Raleigh sent the first settlers. English settlers led by John White arrive in 1587 91 Men, 17 Women and 9 Children White ’ s daughter has a baby named Virginia Dare. 1 st newborn in the new colony. White returned to England for supplies. England was at war with Spain so White could not return as quick as he wanted to… After 3 years, White is able to return to Roanoke…

5 What Happened to Roanoke Island ? John White ’ s civilization was no where to be found. It ’ s believed that 1 of 2 things happened… 1- The Croatan ’ s killed the English settlers. 2- The settlers joined the Croatans… The second story is most realistic because the Croatan ’ s learned the English language.

6 Jamestown 1 st permanent English settlement in New World = Jamestown. Founded in 1607, by London Company. Became a Royal Colony in 1824 Its purpose was to make money for the London Company. Had fertile land Created wealth for England in the form of tobacco, a cash crop. Created the VA House of Burgesses, the 1 st representative self Gov ' t. Important People : Chief Powhatan - Leader of Powhatan Indians John Rolfe – Settler, plants tobacco Nathaniel Bacon – Virginia Farmer, leads a rebellion called Bacon ’ s Rebellion.

11 New England Colonies 9/16/1620- Pilgrims leave England, in search of religious freedom in N. America. 101 Pilgrims will sail from Plymouth, England to Plymouth Rock, Massachusetts. They will spend 66 days at sea…

12 New England Colonies Puritans – Protestant Christians who wanted to reform or change the Anglican Church. John Winthrop – creates Massachusetts colony in 1629. Thomas Hooker – leads a group of Puritans to Connecticut in 1636. Hooker was not a fan of Winthrop. Roger Williams - believed taking land away from the Native Americans was wrong, he discovers the colony of Rhode Island.

13 New England Colonies New England Colonies are Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island & New Hampshire ____________________________________________ ______________ The pilgrims were separatists. Separatists are people who form a new country or new religion. They wrote a constitution called the Mayflower Compact. The Mayflower Compact set up an orderly government. 1 st Winter in Plymouth ( MASS ), 1/2 the pilgrim population died. Rhode Island ( RI ) became a colony fit for any religion / faith.

15 The Middle Colonies New Amsterdam ( York ), New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware. New Amsterdam ( York ) was the main seaport. New Amsterdam / New Netherlands became New York. England sent its Navy to New Amsterdam. “ NA ” Governor Peter Stuyvesant surrenders “ NA to England. “ NA ” becomes New York King Charles gives NY to his brother the Duke of York. NJ - Duke of York gave land to Sir George Carteret and Lord John Berkerly to settle west of NY.

16 Who Discovered the Middle Colonies Pennsylvania - founded by William Penn, and the Quakers Quakers were pacifists and peaceful Quakers believed in free religion Quakers treating everyone equal, Quakers shared the land with Native Americans Delaware - was created from a small section of Pennsylvania / New Sweden.

17 Chapter 3 – Section 4 The Southern Colonies

18 Georgia & The Carolinas Maryland, Virginia, N Carolina, S Carolina, Georgia Georgia - James Oglethorpe received a charter to create a colony b / w S. Carolina & Florida. Georgia became a royal colony in 1752. Georgia was found for debtors ( people who owe lots of money ) and wanted a fresh start. Carolina - 8 men received charters in 1663 from King Charles II to settle south of VA. The main port of the South was Charles Town ( Charleston ).

19 The Carolinas In 1729, North and S. Carolina became separate royal colonies. SC / GA ’ s Cash crop = rice. Rice growing was hard work and led to an increase in slave labor. North & South Carolina ’ s constitution was written by John Locke. John Locke = Great English Philosopher. Maryland - Lord Baltimore received land from King Charles I to create a haven for Catholics ( religious freedom ) ; 1649.

20 Maryland Maryland - 1634, Sir George Calvert ( Lord Baltimore founded Maryland. Maryland was a colony that served as a haven for Catholics.

21 Virginia Colony Enslaved African - Americans worked in the VA Colony. Nathaniel Bacon led a rebellion in 1676 against Gov. William Berkeley over the lack of protection of citizens by Gov ’ t. ( BACONS REBELLION ) Nathaniel Bacon was a young planter in western Virginia. Bacon opposed the colonial government because it was dominated by easterners ( businessmen ). Bacon wanted to remove Native Americans from the colony ; he almost took over VA.
