Presentation transcript:

Today: get out choice novel! Read the whole time; prepare for book talk; complete a one-pager I expect you to stay awake and work. Those that have missed quizzes will make it up today. Tomorrow you will have a quiz on Act 3 AND 4 and an essay. Come prepared with TWO deceptions from acts 2-4 that you can write a good essay on. The book talk will be after that. Come with your book and notes (you will turn in notes for grade). Either you are here or not. You can’t make it up. I will return your essay to you tomorrow as a reference for your next essay. Here are some examples of what makes a good essay.

Organized well, clear CEW setup The first deceit in Act 1 is meant for good. Don Pedro plans on “tricking” Hero into marrying Claudio by asking Leonato for her hand in marriage and then “handing” her over to Claudio. This deceit is important for a few reasons. First it shows that women have no say in who they will marry. Even though it is obvious Hero loves Claudio and wants to be with him, she is not being asked directly. Her father has to give his permission for anything to happen. Second, it shows that young men like Claudio (a soldier and perhaps someone with not a lot of power or money) are at a disadvantage when it comes to marriage proposals. Because Don Pedro has status and power as a prince, it makes sense for Claudio to ask for his help in getting Hero. Leonato will be more willing to say yes to Don Pedro’s proposal and trust that any plans Don Pedro has for his daughter. If Don Pedro gives Hero to Claudio, then it must be a good thing. So the deception for Hero’s hand in marriage is a good one. (Even if I don’t agree with it!).

The second deception in this act was meant for bad. Don John, Borachio and Conrade plan on sabotaging the engagement of Claudio and Hero. As of yet, the audience doesn’t know what they plan on doing, but regardless, they are up to no good. This is important because it shows a few things about people like these guys. First, Don John is a bastard son and is in the shadow of his brother Don Pedro. Because of this, he probably feels insecure about himself socially which makes him a pretty miserable person. And since misery loves company, Don John is determined to make things painful for those around him, too. This could mean that he will be the cause for all sorts of problems in the play. Second, the Don Jon’s cronies don’t seem to mind their boss’s sinister side. This shows that people with little power (or purpose) are easily led by people like Don John. (Maybe because they fear him or they like the control they get as a result of the things they plan on doing). So there deception definitely is not good.

An okay answer (barely); warrant needs to be explained more The first deceit in Act 1 is meant for good. Don Pedro plans on “tricking” Hero into marrying Claudio by asking Leonato for her hand in marriage and then “handing” her over to Claudio. This shows that women have no say in who they will marry. This also shows that young men like Claudio have no power. The second deception in this act was meant for bad. Don John, Borachio and Conrade plan on sabotaging the engagement of Claudio and Hero. Because Don John is a bastard son and is in the shadow of his brother Don Pedro, he probably feels insecure about himself socially which makes him a pretty miserable person. And misery loves company.

A weak essay: just a summary of events. The first deceit in Act 1 is meant for good. Don Pedro plans on “tricking” Hero into marrying Claudio by asking Leonato for her hand in marriage and then “handing” her over to Claudio. The second deception in this act was meant for bad. Don John, Borachio and Conrade plan on sabotaging the engagement of Claudio and Hero. Don John is a bastard son and is in the shadow of his brother Don Pedro.

Book talk prep Sheet of paper with your name and hour Book title and author? How many pages? What page are you on?

Choose ONE Write about a decision a character made that surprised you. Why was it surprising? What do you think might happen next or what are you wondering about this decision? OR What bigger issue does this book address? (Political, social, cultural, etc.) Explain how the book addresses the issue and tell your partner what you are thinking about the issue. What is the book making you think about that you hadn’t considered before? Next slide…

Pick a favorite two favorite passages Write down page numbers then… First, explain what is going on in the story when the passage occurs and explain which character the passage relates to. (Quick summary) Second, read the passage aloud (you’ll do this tomorrow) Explain why you like this passage. Why did this passage grab your attention?
