Book Trailers What are they? Tips on making a good one! Our assignment.

What is a book trailer? O Think of it as a commercial or a movie trailer for a movie. You ARE talking about the book in a way that will “sell” it to your audience. O It’s a teaser that will make the book sound so interesting that the audience will want to pick up the book immediately! O It is NOT a book report. O It is NOT a summary of the book. O How would you get a friend to pick up this book without spoiling it for them?

Examples from Publishers O Wonder by R.J. Palacio Wonder by R.J. Palacio O The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate O Squish by Jennifer L. & Matt Holm Squish by Jennifer L. & Matt Holm

Student Examples O The Homework Machine by Dan Gutman The Homework Machine by Dan Gutman O Esperanza Rising Esperanza Rising O The Secret of the Fortune Wookie The Secret of the Fortune Wookie

Our Assignment O You will be creating your own book trailer of a book that you really enjoyed from elementary school. O It can be any book you read between K-5, either in school or at home. O It can be a chapter book or even a picture book. O It will need to be at least 30 seconds in length, but no more than 2 minutes.

Tips O Choose a book you’ve read and that you loved! O Show the cover and state the title and author (and illustrator). O You can share a great quote. O Funny or interesting part? Share part of it. O DON’T give away too much, especially the ending. O It’s easiest to think of the words first! Don’t write too much or you’ll lose your audience. Think in short spurts.

Graphic Organizer (Storyboard) O Your first and last photo should be the cover of the book. The first one should also state the book’s title and the author’s name. You can also take the photos yourself or draw them. Do not have pictures of yourself or friends in the trailer or state your name.

More Tips O Write your script first! You can summarize a little, but not the whole story. O Think in short spurts and catchy phrases. Be clear and concise… no long sentences/phrases. O Start and end strong! Grab their attention… a quote from the book or a question. O You don’t have to write on every single slide! Blank = silence… let the image tell part of the story. O The end is the most important part! O When creating keep it simple. Sometimes too many words, pictures, transitions, and sounds is very distracting.

When Writing Your Script O Some steps and possible questions to answer: Where does your novel take place? Identify your main character. Who is he or she? What does he/she want? What’s his goal? What gets in the way of him reaching his goal? What choice does he have to make? O Other important factors: You don’t want to give away too much information Most of the time you’ll use only one character (Even though it may have multiple.) Use punchy words that are easy to read Don’t worry about writing in full sentences

To Clarify O On your storyboard your first and last slide is to be the cover of your book with it’s title and author as the text. O You need at least 5 images other than the cover images. You will save these in your classroom’s folder under the folder “! Book Trailers.” O You will have to create a Word document for your credits (links to each photo you used). O Use the EV Library Site that is favorited under the 5 th grade folder on the internet when logged into ERWLIB for ALL instructions and handouts. It is there to HELP!

Timeline O Day 1: Choose your book and start a rough draft of your book trailer using the storyboard graphic organizer. O Day 2: Edit your storyboard and share it with Mrs. Marsiglio. O Day 3: Find your images needed to create your book trailer and save them. Create a word document with each site you found the photos and music. O Day 4: Create your book trailer! O Day 5: Share!
