Naming Compounds Unit 2 Chemistry

Covalent Nomenclature What is a covalent bond????

Steps in naming Write the first element (least electronegative) first and do not change the name Write the second element (most electronegative) second and add the – ide suffix Then add prefixes depending on how many atoms are present

Prefixes 1- mono 2- di 3- tri 4- tetra 5- penta 6- hexa 7- hepta 8-octa 9- nona 10- deca

CO 2  1. write the first element: carbon  2. write the second element with an –ide suffix: carbon oxide  3. Add prefixes: monocarbon dioxide *** you do not need to write mono if it on the first element**** so carbon dioxide is correct

Examples N 2 O 3- - dinitrogen trioxide H 2 S-  Dihydrogen sulfide

Assignment Finish Ionic naming sheets Covalent naming sheets Mixed naming sheet
