1 Covalent Compounds Two non-metals

2 For each compound, which one is the metal?
NO

3 How is the bond formed?

4 Covalent Compounds A covalent compound is one in which electrons are SHARED.  Involve NON-METALS only.

5

6

7 What are these called? CO2 CO

8 Naming Covalent Compounds
State the name of each element and use a prefix to determine how many of each atom there are in the formula. Change the ending of 2nd element to ide. Do not write a prefix for the first element if there is only one atom.  Do not reduce: N2O Not NO

9 Naming Covalent Compounds
Some binary compounds with hydrogen have common names: H2O NH3 CH4 water ammonia methane

10 Naming Covalent Compounds
Prefixes for Covalent Compounds 1- mono 6 – hexa 2 – di 7 – hepta 3 – tri 8 – octa 4 – tetra 9 – nona 5 - penta 10 - deca
