In this chapter you will learn about compounds and their names and formulas

 All compounds contain atoms of two or more elements that are bonded  There are two types of compounds: molecular compounds and ionic compounds

 Molecular compounds contain atoms of two or more elements that are bonded together by sharing electrons  Examples are CO2, H2O, and CCl4. These are chemical formulas of molecular compounds

 The name of a compound gives clues about the formula  Compounds that end in “ide” are usually binary  Binary- Contains two elements

 Examples of binary molecular compund:  Silicon dioxide= Silicon + Oxygen  Dihydrogen sulfide= Hydrogen + Sulfur  Each name is made of two words and the words are based on the elements. The prefix di- means two

mono- 1octa- 8 di- 2nona-9 tri- 3deca-10 tetra- 4 penta- 5 hexa- 6 hepta- 7

 If you know the name of a binary compound, you can often write its formula.  Suppose you are given the name carbon tetrachoride  You would write the subscript of each element  CCl4=1 carbon and 4 chlorides

 Write the chemical formula for each molecular compound 1. Sulfur hexaflouride 2. Tetraphosphorus decoxide 3. Dinitrogen monoxide

 The formula of a compound shows the atoms in the smallest unit of a compound  A molecule is a neutral group of two or more atoms that are bonded together by sharing its electrons  Is Cl2 a molecular compound?
