Geography Early Influences Government Roman Law Rome Expands

This country looks like a high- heeled boot.

What is Italy?

These craggy, mountains separate Italy from European lands to the north.

What are the Alps?

These mountains run all the way down the boot from the north to the south.

What is the Apennines?

This river was the site chosen for Rome and a source of water.

What is the Tiber River?

These were the number of hills that Rome was built on that were very steep, making it easy to defend against enemy attack.

What are seven hills?

This was the plain that Latin- speaking people built the city of Rome in central Italy

Where is Latium?

This was the legend of two brothers who founded the city of Rome.

Who are Romulus and Remus?

This was the group of people that lived in Rome as early as 1000 B.C.

Who are the Latins?

These were skilled metalworkers who became rich from mining and trade in 650 B.C.

Who are the Etruscans?

These group of leaders became cruel which caused Rome to form a Republic.

Who are the Tarquins?

This is a form of government in which the leader is not a king or queen but someone put in office by citizens with the right to vote.

What is a republic?

This social class was made up of the wealthy landowners.

Who are the patricians?

This social group contained artisans, shopkeepers, and small farmers.

What is the Plebeians?

The main job of this title was to interpret the law and act as judges in court.

Who are the praetors?

This man was a dictator who left his farm and gathered an army to defeat the enemy. When he was done, he gave up his power and went home.

Who is Cincinnatus?

This was Rome’s first code of laws.

What is the Twelve Tables?

This is where the carved laws were placed.

Where is the Forum or marketplace?

This stated principles of justice that applied to all people of everywhere.

What is the Law of Nations?

This is the idea that the law should apply to everyone equally and that all people should be treated the same way by the legal system.

What is the “rule of law”?

This country owes much to the Roman legal system.

What is the United States?

This city was found on the coast of North Africa and had a rich trading empire.

What is Carthage?

The First Punic War stated when the Romans send an army to this island to prevent a Carthaginian takeover.

What is Sicily?

He was the greatest general sent by Carthage to start the Second Punic War and defeated Rome at the Battle of Cannae.

Who is Hannibal?

This Roman general invaded Carthage and defeated the Carthaginians at the Battle of Zama.

Who is Scipio?

This war is when Roman soldiers burned Carthage and enslaved 50,000 men, women, and children; they also spread salt to the earth so that no crops would grow.
