2 First Punic War Romans sent to Sicily to prevent Carthaginian takeover. Romans encountered powerful Carthaginian navy. So Romans had to build up a navy. War – 20 years! Romans defeated Carthaginians on Sicily. Carthaginians forced off Sicily; Romans began to rule

3 Second Punic War Carthage expanded to Spain. Rome didn’t like it! Hannibal – Carthaginian general “Take the fight to Italy.”

4 46,000 men, many horses 37 elephants

5 Hannibal’s army kept going through Italy. Rome’s strategy - - General Scipio invaded Carthage itself. Hannibal had no choice but to go back to defend his own land. Scipio and the Romans defeated the Carthaginians.

6 Carthage gave up Spain to Rome. Carthage gave up its navy. Rome now ruled the western Mediterranean. Third Punic war – Rome burned Carthage took 50,000 as slaves spread salt on earth so no crops would grown
