“ Doing it the Chieftain Way” Developing a School Culture and Climate

Twitter

PURPOSE – Share ideas on developing your brand – Discuss what is involved in developing a school culture of success and a climate of high expectations – Hear from students the effect a school’s culture and climate has on them

Developing Your Brand Who are you? What do you want people to see? What kind of students are you wanting to produce? What are you selling?

Developing Your Brand

My Beliefs

T.R.I.B.E. Teen Resistance and Intervention Behavioral Endorsement – Working in partnership with the Drug Education Council – 385 Students in grades 6-12 during the school year – We have tested 118 students – Students will graduate with an endorsement on their diploma

T.R.I.B.E. HOW??? – School Board Policy 5.82 allows for the testing of any student participating in extra-curricular activities What happens if they test positive? – 1 st Offense – C.A.P.P. through the Drug Education Council – 2 nd Offense – More intensive drug education counseling – 3 rd Offense – Loss of extra curricular privileges

T.R.I.B.E. How was it implemented? – 39 students were chosen and brought to the gym for a informational meeting Were given field trip forms and were told to come see Mr. Ward if they did not think they would pass 3 came to Mr. Ward – 2 out of the 3 passed the next test – The one who failed has passed every test since February – We took 37 students to the Occupational Health Center for athletic physicals and drug testing – They went through the same process as if it was for a job

Doing it the Chieftain Way The children of Chickasaw attended over 50 different schools in the Mobile County Public School System (MCPSS) There was no sense of community or school pride Needed something to latch on to

Doing it the Chieftain Way Academics – Pre-AP program beginning in 6 th Grade – Mandatory Study Hall for athletes who have a weekly class average below 70% Student is ineligible is average is below 60% Weekly progress reports – All students are strongly encouraged to participate in a minimum of two clubs or sports

Christin Madison What does “Doing it the Chieftain Way” mean to me? Is my school special?

CHIEFTAIN BELIEFS We are a magnet for greatness! Our students are a part of our family! Everyone should show improvement everyday! Anyone can be average, we are not just anyone.
