Safety Outdoors

Things to Remember! Safety Outdoors (CN) Hypothermia Pedestrian A sudden and dangerous drop in body temperature. A person who travels on foot

Safety on foot -Walk on sidewalks when you can or walk on the side of the road facing oncoming traffic. -Cross in crosswalks when they are available. -Look both ways several times before crossing. -If you walk at night, take a well-lit route and wear light colored or reflective clothing. -Do not talk on a cell phone or wear headphones as you walk.

Safety on Wheels -Always wear a helmet when: riding a bike, skateboard or scooter. If possible include wrist guards, elbow and knee pads, and light gloves. -Check the seat and handlebars to make sure they are secure. Test the wheels to see if they spin freely. -Stay ALERT, obey all traffic laws, ride with the flow of traffic, and if you ride with a group, ride in a single file, not side by side.

Safety in Water Follow all posted safety rules Only swim with a trusted life guard or when an adult is present Never swim in strong currents Make sure the water is safe to swim in Only dive in safe areas

Safety in Vehicles -Always wear a safety belt whenever you ride in a vehicle. -If you take the bus to school, do not bother the bus driver while he or she is driving. Do not get up while the bus is moving. -Motor Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 2-14.

Neighborhood Safety Neighborhood Safety: -Don’t travel alone at night or go into an area that you know is unsafe. -Walk in well-lit places. -Leave expensive items at home. -Notice the people around you. -Get help, scream, run, and call 911 if someone is trying to hurt you.

Safety at Play Make sure to always play with another person Stay aware of hazard signs or street signs Use good judgement by planning ahead Warm up and cool down Know your limits

Hot Weather Safety -If you feel dizzy, out of breath, or have a headache, take a break. -Keep cool by drinking plenty of water. -Sign of heat exhaustion include cold, clammy skin, dizziness, or nausea. Signs of heatstroke include increase in body temperature, difficulty breathing, and a loss of consciousness.

Cold Weather Safety -Dress in layers, wear a hat, warm footwear, and gloves. -Anyone who starts to feel very cold or shiver should go inside and get warm.

Safety Outdoors Write a complete sentence using the vocabulary words “pedestrian” and “hypothermia”. Why do you think infants and children are safest in the backseat of a vehicle?

Safety in Vehicles Answer: The main reason is because the force of air bags can hurt or even kill small children.
