Principles of Design The principles of design are guides that tell how the elements of design should be combined. They are balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasis, and harmony.
The Principles of Design Balance- When the spaces on both sides of a central line, real or imagined, appear equal. Symmetrical balance or formal balance – when the spaces on each side of a garment look just the same. Asymmetrical Balance or informal balance – when the design elements are different on both sizes.
Proportion- describes how separate parts of a garment relate each other and to the whole in size.
Emphasis – the focal point of a design, the part that draws attention.
Rhythm - is visual, carrying the eye through a regular pattern produced by design elements. Rhythm moves the eye gently from one area of the garment to another. Radiation Repetition Gradation
5. Harmony – when design elements of design are used according to the principles of design, creating a pleasing visual image.
