SLIDES WITH THIS GRAPHIC ARE SLIDES THAT YOU HAVE TO WRITE.

You will have one of these for each topic!

SIMPLE SENTENCE A sentence that is made up of 1 Independent Clause.

SIMPLE SENTENCE REMINDERS 1.First, it begins with a capital letter. 2.In addition, it includes an end mark— either a period [. ], question mark [ ? ], or exclamation point [ ! ]. 3.Most importantly, the complete sentence must contain at least one main clause. A main clause contains an independent subject and verb and expresses a complete thought.main clausesubjectverb

SIMPLE SENTENCE Description: One independent clause! Example: The cat walked into the house. Non-Example: The little cat ran, for it was time for dinner. Your Example: ______________________________________

WHAT ARE COMPOUND SENTENCES? Compound Sentence: Two or more independent clauses joined together either by a semicolon or a comma + coordinating conjunction. (Two adults together.)  Ex: I walked to the store, and I bought some milk.  Ex: I walked to the store; I bought some milk. REMEMBER: Coordinating Conjunctions: F.A.N.B.O.Y.S. - For, And, Nor, But, Or, Yet, So

RULES FOR COMPOUND SENTENCES WITH COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS: Only put two independent clauses together if they GO TOGETHER. Ex: I like cheese, so I eat it a lot. – GOOD Do NOT put two independent clauses together that are not related. Ex: I like cheese, and Amy is fun. – BAD

RULES FOR COMPOUND SENTENCES WITH COORDINATING CONJUNCTIONS: Use a comma with a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS) to combine two independent clauses. The comma ALWAYS goes BEFORE the coordinating conjunction. ALWAYS: My dog is the best dog ever, so I love her a lot. NEVER: My dog is the best dog ever so, I love her a lot.

RULES FOR COMPOUND SENTENCES WITH SEMICOLONS: Only use a semicolon to put two independent clauses together if they are very, very closely related. Think of a Comma + Coordinating as dating. Think of a Semicolon as married. Ex: Some people write with a word processor; others write with a pen or pencil.

COMPOUND SENTENCE Description: Ind. Clause, (FANBOYS) Ind. Clause Ind. Clause ; Ind. Clause Example: She went to the pet store, and her friend went with her. Non-Example: Mow Mow, the cat, is awesome. Your Example: _____________________________________

WRITE YOUR COMPOUND EXAMPLE

A complex sentence is an independent clause joined by one or more dependent clauses. It always has a subordinating conjunction such as because, since, after, although, or when.

 When the subordinating conjunction is in the BEGINNING, you need a comma after the dependent clause. EXAMPLE: When When Mow Mow tears into the presents, I become angry.

 When the subordinating conjunction is in the MIDDLE, you do NOT need a comma after the independent clause. EXAMPLE: when I become angry when Mow Mow tears into the presents.

COMPLEX SENTENCE Description: Dep. Clause, Ind. Clause Ind. (no comma!!) Dep. Clause Example: Although I fed the cat, he was still hungry. Non-Example: The kitten went to sleep. Your Example: ________________________________________

COMPOUND-COMPLEX SENTENCE Description: A compound-complex sentence is made from two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. Example: Although I fed the cat, he was still hungry, and he continued to beg for food. Non-Example: The kitten went to sleep, and she purred. Your Example: ________________________________________

Compound-Complex Sentence

What kinds of mistakes might I be making?

FRAGMENT- WE DON’T LIKE FRAGMENTS!  Description: fails to be a sentence in the sense that it CANNOT stand by itself. It does not contain even one independent clause. Example: 1- Cat outside the garage door. 2- In the barn, during the storm, the cats. Non-Example: 1- There is a cat outside of the garage door. Your Example: ________________________________________

RUN-ON  WE DON’T LIKE RUN-ONS! Description: Sentence containing two or more independent clauses that are not separated by a colon or semicolon. Example: I went home and I fed the small cat a big meal because he was so hungry I went inside. Non-Example: I went home, and I fed the small cat a big meal. Your Example: ________________________________________
