Understand typography and it’s art historical & contemporary connections in cultures both home and abroad. Understand what transformative art is and how to create it.

Typography is the art and technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed.

Connections to Art History Illuminated Texts & Letters This creative style of typography has been around since the Middle Ages. In the past these styles were referred to as illuminated letters. Illuminated manuscripts are handwritten books created during the Middle Ages that incorporated pictures and decorations. Illustrations were painted in bright colors with gold and silver leaf accents to help light up or “illuminate” the pages. Many illuminated manuscripts were religious texts or prayer books and illuminators, the painters, were extremely skilled artists.

Today you are finishing your creative typography on your portfolios. If you get done early, you can start working on APJ Pages Title Page: Pen & Ink Notes Pages 2 separate pages 1 st note page should include – Definition of Typography (Show examples) – Discuss Art Historical Connections to Illuminated Letters/Text (Provide Examples) 2 nd Note page should include – Notes on shading techniques and practice examples completed in class. – Also include your best examples from cylinder worksheet and you can also include your hamburger. Provide small discussions on your learning processes and experiences with these activities. What are you doing well, what do you need improvements on, etc. How do you plan to get better or improve? Brainstorming page for “Creative Typography” Illuminated Text Art Project This should include your practice, your favs list, any notes or ideas you came up with, etc. Process Page (should be short…there were not too many) Reflection Page (See Next Slide for Prompts)

Reflection Explain how your work can be considered a transformation from one form to another. – Example: Flat, plain objects to textured objects with form. – -Example: small images combined to transform into one large image or 1 large image transformed into a range of smaller images. How can your art be considered creative typography? How is your work innovative? What elements of art and principles of design did you use to create this piece? What LP traits did you use during the creation of this artwork? What is your final opinion of your piece, what did you do well on, what skills can you improve on?
