1 Studio Art I How do artists use tools and techniques to create a realistic image?

2 Unit summary Learning to Look See and Draw This unit enables students to develop and utilize their observation skills to study and record objects in real life. As artists, students respond to a design prompt: A local gallery is presenting an exhibit and you are asked to submit a triptych of a still life study. Students make educated choices to recognize and record their findings in a series of drawings known as a triptych. This series of observational studies are developed to produce finished renderings demonstrating a variety of skillfully used media and mastered techniques.

3 Arizona State Standards STRAND 1-  Concept 1 :Creative Process: Develop, revise and reflect on ideas for expression in personal art work.  Concept 2: Materials, tools and techniques. Use materials tools and techniques in his or her own art work.  Concept 3: Elements and Principles: Use elements of art and principles of design in his or her own art work.  Concept 5: Quality: Apply criteria to assess the quality of in progress and finished art work.

4 Learning to Look, See, Draw…. Learning objectives Students will:  Provide a unique solution to an artists problem  Study a still life  Create renderings  Create accuracy in shape proportion and detail of shape and form  Break the borders  Select appropriate media  Select appropriate composition and page position  Create a convincing illusion of 3D form  Create a value scale  Accurately apply a range of value  Create a color scheme  Apply a color scheme with accurate control of media  Practice a variety of inking techniques  Demonstrate a high degree of accuracy with at least one inking technique  Create a clear illusion of SD form  Mount artwork  Self-evaluate artwork

5 Essential Question: How do artist's Communicate? Unit Questions: How do artists use tools and techniques to create a realistic image?

6 Content Questions:  Can you respond to the design prompt in an original and innovative way?  How will you develop, implement and communicate your ideas?  Can you make educated choices and decisions with media, techniques and skills?  How do you analyze and synthesize information in order to solve problems and answer questions?  Can you articulate thoughts and ideas clearly and effectively through artwork?  Can you demonstrate initiative to advance skill levels towards a professional level artistically?  Are you able to set and meet high standards and goals for delivering quality work on time?  How do you manage time effectively to manage a workload?  Can you demonstrate diligence and a positive work ethic?

7 A rubric designed for both student and teacher is used as a pre and post test measurement of student growth. Through out the unit both Formative and Summative assessments will take place. Formative :  Practice exercises  Thumbnail sketches  Drafts  Daily dialog  Revision, reworking  on-going authentic assessment. Summative :  Practice exercises  vocabulary tests  sketchbook checks  work review  reports/research  Complete assignments  checklists and rubrics.

8 Prerequisite Skills Be able to see Hold a drawing tool have the ability to follow directions!

9 Supplies needed:  Geometric forms: cube, rectangular prism, sphere, cylinder, pyramid  80lb white drawing paper  2B, 4B and 6B graphite drawing pencils  Ultra fine sharpies  Prisma color pencils  Canson colored paper  Spot light And work ethic!
