Lesson 10, 05 November 9b

Passive is used to:  To highlight an event, rather than his author, that could be unknown;  To describe a procedure, an operation in scientific range;  To give instructions and express prohibitions.

When rewriting active sentences in passive voice, note the following:  the object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence  the subject of the active sentence becomes the object of the passive sentence (or is dropped) For example: «People don’t use this road much» «This road isn’t used much»

When we use a passive verb we say “WHAT HAPPENS TO THE SUBJECT ” For example: «This road isn’t used much»

When we use the passive, who or what causes the action is often unknown or unimportant: For example: «A lot of money was stolen in the robbery». (somebody stole it, but we don’t know who)

If we want to say who does or what causes the action, we use : “BY ”

The passive is : Be(is,was) + past participle (seen, done..) AFFERMATIVENEGATIVE QUESTION SUB+BE+ PAST PARTICIPLE Cheese is made from milk SUB+NOT BE+ PAST PARTICIPLE Cheese isn’t made from milk BE+SUB+PAST PARTICIPLE Is cheese made from milk?
