2 A Definition The tense of a verb indicates the time of the action or the time of the state of being that is expressed by the verb.

4 The first verb tense is the past perfect verb tense.
Present Perfect Present Future Perfect Future The past perfect tense indicates that something happened in the past before another specific time in the past. Example: The teacher had prepared for every lesson except one.

Past Perfect Past Present Perfect Present Future Perfect Future The past tense indicates that something happened in the past. Example: The teacher prepared for every lesson.

6 The third verb tense is the present perfect verb tense.
Past Perfect Past Present Perfect Present Future Perfect Future The present perfect tense indicates a happening before now that may be continuing. It is not clear when the event happened. Example: The teacher has graded papers in her room.
