 Foods you choose can make a difference in your health. Food = fuel  Healthy foods help your body function at its best while unhealthy foods can contribute to certain health problems.  NEED TO MAKE HEALTHY FOOD CHOICES!!! MOTIVATE  Brainstorm a list of foods you like to eat, including foods you think are healthy.  Trade lists with another pair.  Look over the list and quickly number the foods from healthiest to least healthiest.

NUTRITION  Nutrition is the study of diet – what you eat – and it’s relationship to your health.  The food you eat provides nutrients Nutrients- 6 substances needed to survive and grow.  Understanding nutrients can help you make healthy food choices.

GROUP ACTIVITY  6 Groups (assigned) Each group has their own nutrient, become the expert of your nutrient!  Read handout about your nutrient.  Write notes in your WB pg  Make a poster to present the WB information to the class.  Take notes while others are presenting what they found.

 Complex Carbohydrates Provide lasting energy for the body Provide fiber to help the body eliminate waste Examples – vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains CARBOHYDRATES  Simple Carbohydrates Sugars that add calories without providing other nutrients Eating too many can lead to weight gain Examples – cookies, candy, and cake

FATS  Important for normal growth, nerve function, protects the body provides energy, and protects organs.  Fat helps the body make certain types of hormones and absorb vitamins.  Healthiest sources (unsaturated): fish, nuts, and vegetable oils.  Saturated Fats Come from meat and diary products, as well as coconut.

AVOID TRANS FATS!!!  Are not normal type of fat and are linking to diseases and health problems.  Harmful cholesterol levels and play a role in heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.  Found in most margarines, vegetable shortening, and many fast foods and commercial baked goods.

PROTEINS  Used to make skin, hair, muscle, and bones. Help maintain and repair cells and tissues, make antibodies and hormones, and keep the body’s fluids balanced.  Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and diary. Also found in nuts, nut butters, seeds, beans, peas, tofu, and other soybean products.  Not getting enough can effect bones and muscles and cause problems with skin tone.  Too much can cause loss in calcium and may make liver and kidney disease worse.  Can add to weight gain… proteins are usually high in fats.

VITAMINS  Fruits and vegetables are excellent sources of vitamins.  Vitamins help control digestion, growth, and how fast the body uses food.  Help make hormones, heal wounds, and keep nerves working.  Leafy green vegetables and yellow vegetables, oranges, grapefruits, lemons, limes, and green chilies.

 Minerals help control how the body uses food and are important for the growth and health of body structures.  Help build healthy bones and teeth, help the blood carry oxygen, help nerves, and much more…  Found in almost all foods vegetables, fruits, and grain products MINERALS

WATER  Necessary for all living things!  Moves nutrients and oxygen through the body.  Helps with digestion, removes waste, and helps the body keep a steady temperature.  Found in beverages, fruits, and vegetables.

CHRONIC DISEASE  Illness that develops inside a person’s body and can last a long time, can be treated but not cured.  Many happen slowly over time, and don’t cause symptoms right away.  Mild or life threatening.  Heredity can play a role, but lifestyle and nutrition can either prevent or contribute to chronic diseases.
