DISCUSSION QUESTIONS  Why does Amir dismiss his birthday gifts? Does he dismiss Hassan and Ali’s gift for the same reason?  What decision does Amir make in this chapter that has significant consequences?  What is the consequence?  Why is Baba’s reaction to Ali and Hassan’s decision so startling?  In what way are the final lines of the chapter poetic?

AMIR’S LAWYER  In your notebook section, create a case either FOR or AGAINST Amir’s actions in Chapter 9.  Was he justified? What should happen to him? What were the implications of his actions?

AMIR’S LAWYER  You will argue your case with a small group after independent work time.  Textual evidence makes your case STRONGER.

Check your notes from the beginning of novel for the significance of this date.  After you have reread and found the significance of the date, create a visual representation of the interaction between Baba and the Russian soldier and the outcome of Kamal and his father?

WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2015  ACT Passage CW GRADE: 15 points

OBJECTIVE  SWBAT: Use evidence from the text to explain how both Baba and Amir has changed after moving to America.

GOLDEN LINES  There are several Golden Lines within Chapter 10 that generalize the Baba and Amir of America.  Find a Golden line for Baba and a Golden line for Amir.  In a paragraph for each, explain how the line you chose illustrates the comparison of the character from Kabul to America.  CWPA: 10 points

GOLDEN LINES – TEACHER EXAMPLE p. 129 “A year and a half since we’d stepped off the Boeing from Peshawar, and Baba was still adjusting.”

GOLDEN LINES – TEACHER EXAMPLE In Chapter 10 of The Kite Runner, Baba struggles to acclimate to his new home in California. Amir says,“A year and a half since we’d stepped off the Boeing from Peshawar, and Baba was still adjusting.” Baba has difficulty adapting to American culture. He refuses to embrace some of the customs of America, such as learning to speak English. He finds every part of California inferior to Kabul.
