1 Monday, November 14, 2011 Objective – SWBAT: analyze a given passage to determine textual organization, evaluate performance on recent TKM assessment, analyze the effect of film techniques. Warm up - Remember the film version of To Kill a Mockingbird. Write a paragraph describing at least 3 ways that the filmmaker used film techniques to make the film more interesting. Agenda –1. Finish TKM – 20 minutes 2. Und. Text Org Worksheet – A, B, C, D 3. TKM test review Homework – None

2 Tuesday, November 15, 2011 Objective – SWBAT: analyze a given passage to determine textual organization, Compare/contrast literature written about 1930’s American life, evaluate performance on recent TKM test. Warm up - “The Great Chicago Fire” – pg 889 of textbook. Read passage, and take notes in outline form as suggested in book (Close Read). Analyze the passage for textual organization clues. Agenda –1. Text Organization passages A - G 2. “Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry” Pg 388 in Lit book. 3. Finish review of TKM test 4. Apostrophe lesson Homework – Write a paragraph that compares and contrasts To Kill a Mockingbird with Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Be sure to refer to point-of-view, setting and theme in your paragraph.

3 Pop Quiz on “The Great Chicago Fire”  Close your textbook, and use your notes to answer the following questions: 1. When did the Great Chicago Fire occur? (year) 2. Name at least 3 reasons that Chicago in that time period was a “recipe for disaster.” 3. Why did the first person who spotted the fire contribute to it taking longer to put out? 4. What happened when firefighters called for help from other states? 5. About how many people were killed in the fire? 6. About how many people were left homeless? 7. What eventually put the fire out?

Warm up - Pair/share homework passages. Agenda –1. Text organization post assessment 2. Film terminology (SB pgs 62-63) - jigsaw Homework – Create a visual representation using film techniques of different “scenes” from TKM. Use the following film techniques: long shot, medium shot, close- up and extreme close-up. (Use SB pg 63 as a guide)

ET and the Giver – film techniques jigsaw 3. go over short answer questions to TKM test Homework – Read chapter 1 of The Giver. Make a list of at least 10 examples (textual references) of how the author is setting the tone for the novel.

8 Monday, November 21, 2011 Title – Utopia Objective – SWBAT: Examine a challenging text (Utopia by Thomas More) through close reading, define and describe the words society and utopia Warm up - Write a definition for the words society and utopia. Use both a dictionary definition, and a then put the definition in your own words. Agenda –1. Frayer Model for Society and Utopia 2. Read/discuss excerpt from Utopia 3. Quiz on Chapters 1-2 Homework – Dialectical Journals – choose your own passages for chapters 1-3 in The Giver. Be sure to reflect, clarify, question, and evaluate.

Describe an example of a man vs. society conflict that you know from movies, literature, tv, etc. Agenda –1. Go over DJ’s for Chapters 1-3 2. Explain Edmodo.com 3. Springboard, pages 60 and 61 Homework – Read Chapters 4-5, Sign up for Edmodo.com in preparation for online discussions about The Giver
