+ Formal Analysis Same idea as literary analysis, but for ART. Let’s give it a try…

+ Formal Analysis Tools You will explain how the artist uses these tools to convey his or her message Color Line Light Space

+ Formal Analysis First, spend time looking at the work. What is happening? What is the mood? What is a theme?

+ Formal Analysis Second, explain how the artist uses one of the tools (COLOR, LINE, LIGHT, SPACE) to convey these aspects.

+ Edvard Munch, The Scream

+ Formal Analysis Munch uses wavy lines to convey the disturbed mood of the painting. The wavy lines evoke feelings of unrest and uncertainty for the viewer.

+ Dreams & Memories of The Kite Runner Chapter 7 1. Read through the text once. Just read it. 2. Read through it again. This time summarize the events. 3. Connect the memory or dream back to the bigger picture of the chapter. (What is the BIG DEAL in Chapter 7?!)

He actually got out of prison just as I was going through the Police Academy, and he even came to my graduation. You know what he told me one time when I visited him in prison, right before I deployed for Irag? He told me: ‘I’m older than you. But you’re my big brother.’ That was so honest of him, it really f***ed me up.”
