Jessica Cummins October 11 th 3 rd hour Career Technology Foundations

Imagine getting to spend your summer off of work every year. Having time to spend with you family, relax, go on vacations. Also imagine be paid to help improve the lives of children every day, and teaching them skills that they will need in everyday life. Being a middle school math teacher would be my ideal career. I have always loved working with children, and have also always loved math! In order to get a better understanding of my chosen career field I will be researching nature or work, working conditions, training and qualifications, job outlook, earnings, and a unrelated occupation.

 Working with children  Grade students’ assignments  Plan lessons  Prepare students for standardized tests  Develop and enforce classroom rules  Prepare students for difficult lessons they will learn in high school

 Mental  Working indoors  In a classroom  Work a 10 month school year  About 8 hours a day  May meet with parents, students, and other teachers before and after school  2 month summer break

 Bachelor’s degree  Can major in a content area of in elementary education  Student teaching  Must be certified  Can become mentors, lead teachers, and with more education, even a principals or assistant principals  Take senior leadership, web design, and all advanced math classes in high school  Michigan State or University of Michigan

 Declining  Expected to increase 17% from  Employment growth will vary by region  Student-teacher ratio is expected to decline also  Could depend on local government budget  Would like to work here in Michigan  Competitive

 hope to make an average amount of money  Annual wage of $51,960  This does not quite meet my goals  Lowest 10% earned less than $34,990  Top 10% percent earned more than $80,940  first purchase with these earnings will either be a new car or a house, something not too expensive though.

Pediatric Physical Therapist  $76,310 per year  Doctoral or professional degree  Job outlook or 39%(much faster than average)  Work in hospitals, clinics, and private offices  I chose this career for a back up because I love to work with children and assisting them back to health would be very meaningful

After doing this presentation on being a math teacher, I learned that I am a little on the fence about perusing this chosen career field. I look forward to teaching math to middle school students, but this project showed me some things about being a teacher that I didn’t know. Although this is what I have wanted to do for a while now, the job outlook and pay may contribute to me choosing different career. I will have to do some more research in order to make my decision.
