Presentation transcript:

 Universal design is the concept of creating products and living spaces that are easy for everyone to use  Structural elements of universal design ▪ Wide doorways ▪ Entrances without steps  Nonstructural elements of universal design ▪ Cabinets with pull out shelves ▪ Lever style door handles ▪ Touch lamps that operate without switches

 Furnishings should be comfortable, tasteful and suit your lifestyle  Should be durable enough to last for several years  Factors to consider when choosing furniture  Should be functional ▪ Look for pieces with multiple uses  Furniture should be in proportion to the size of the room and the other furnishings in the room ▪ Tables the correct height for the chair they will be used with  Children need sturdy, durable, easily cleaned furniture  Light colors and decorative fabrics are best on furniture used infrequently

 Common styles  Traditional – based on popular styles from the past ▪ Early American ▪ Victorian  Modern – has simple lines ▪ Reflects theme of “form follows function” ▪ Example: A chair provides a comfortable place to sit ▪ No unnecessary frills  Contemporary – latest designs and materials ▪ Based on latest designs and materials ▪ Plain lines and geometric shapes ▪ Often made from metal, plastics, and glass ▪ Emphasize textures

 Consider type of materials used  Evaluate how well the furniture is made  Look for sturdy joints on wood furniture ▪ Joints held with glue, screws and nails are weak  The frame of an upholstered piece (has fabric covering) should feel sturdy ▪ Joints should be reinforced with corner blocks  Sit on a piece of furniture to judge quality of springs and cushions  Upholstery should be durable, stain repellant, and fire resistant

 How a room is organized affects the room’s  appearance  comfort  convenience

INDOOR  Kitchen  Family room  Living room OUTDOOR  Porches  Patios  Yards Areas where members can gather and spend time with one another.

 Should reflect the needs and tastes of all family members  Enough furniture to accommodate all family members as well as guests  Furniture should be arranged to make communication easier  May contain more than one activity center  Grouping of all furnishings needed for a particular activity

 A place to be alone and store belongings  If necessary to share a bedroom space can be divided to create greater privacy

MMaking a floor plan SScale floor plan – drawing that shows the size and shape of a room ▪F▪First step is to measure the room. Walls, doors, windows, etc. ▪S▪Scale of ¼” = 1 foot means that ¼ inch on paper is the same as 1 foot of your room ▪U▪Use graph paper and make each square equal to a certain measurement (1 foot) ▪D▪Draw walls, leave openings for doors and windows. ▪D▪Draw doors & windows using correct symbols ▪I▪Indicate placement of vents, and electrical outlets using correct symbols

 Measure depth and width of furniture  Create furniture templates using same scale as floor plan (1/4” = 1’)  Use furniture templates to arrange furniture on scale floor plan

FFactors to consider AActivities that will take place in the room SSpace needed for each piece of furniture GGroup furniture for each activity to organize space SSleeping area – bed, night stand ▪2▪2 feet clearance on three sides of bed unless a twin bed (6” from wall) SStudy area – desk and chair, bookcase, space for hobbies and computer ▪2▪2-3 feet to pull chair back from desk GGuest area – TV stand, music equipment, chairs/floor cushions DDressing area – chest of drawers near closet ▪3▪3 feet clearance in front of dresser to pull out drawers ▪R▪Room to open closet doors

 The paths within a home that people take to get from one room to another and from one part of a room to another ▪ Nothing should block traffic patterns ▪ Should not have to squeeze between objects ▪ Should avoid cutting through a conversation area or in front of someone’s view

 Decorative  Pictures, flowers, statues  Functional  Clocks, lamps  Select accessories with textures and colors that go well with the rest of the room  Keep proportion in mind  Small table = small vase w/ small flower

 Draw one wall 12 feet long.  Draw one wall perpendicular to the first wall 11 feet long. (creates a corner)  Create 3 rd and 4 th wall same as 1 st and 2 nd to complete a rectangle.  Along one 11’ wall place a door (36”wide), 6 inches from the corner.  Along the opposite 11’ wall place a window (42” wide), 1 feet from the corner, then another window (42” wide), 2’ from the first window.  Along the adjacent 12’ wall, place a sliding closet door (6’ wide), three feet from the corner.  On the remaining 12’ wall place three electrical outlets, each 3 feet apart, beginning 3’ from the corner.  Place a vent 6x12” on the wall with the exit door,3.5’ from the corner w/o door.  On line below drawing indicate the scale used. (scale: 1’=1/4”)
