What activities are going to be taking place in the room? Who will be using the room? How much space is needed for movement? What type of floor plan do you have? Where are the architectural feature?

Work together at your table to brainstorm activities that are done in each type of room. Be prepared to share with the class. Living room/family room Dinning room Bedroom

6 How much space is needed for movement?
Traffic Flow- the ability of people to move around a room and between rooms. Circulation Pattern Anthropometrics- the study of the human body and it’s movement

7 Traffic Pattern Types Family Work Service Guest Most complex
Developed from family’s living habits Well traveled route are short and direct Work Mostly involves the kitchen Work Triangle- traffic pattern between sink, refrigerator, and cooking units Service Movement in and out of the home Guest Easiest to determine Movement from entry to coat closet to living room with access to a bathroom

10 Furniture Arrangement Basics- Living room/Family room
Secondary seating Primary conversation Area Main conversation area 8-12 feet in diameter If the room is larger than 10’x14’ there is room for a secondary seating area. Seating for 2-3 people Piano, desk or chair for one person

Dinning room Bedroom 3 feet of table length for each person seated There should be at least inches of space from the table edge to be able to walk around when people are seated. Space on either side of the bed should be at least 22 inches Clearance in front of closet should be at least 33 inches
