Presentation transcript:

1 MICE PM Report Infrastructure/integration progress Electrical work AFC, diffuser, etc Help with project control & staffing issues Worries & problems Don’t have time for a detailed status report, have a look at: MICE CMPB, 17 th April 2009

Infrastructure/integration news Civil engineering heavy work is now done –All shield walls, galleries and floors are complete For Phase Two from now on this activity will convert to ‘integration’, each MICE step and associated engineering work is explicitly identified in the WBS MICE project work and installation staff will take a holiday for all of June To allow redecoration, floor sealing and lighting upgrade All essential before installation of Phase Two subsystems Air conditioning is going well So is the Compressed air installation PPS installation is a worry though 2

Air conditioning Going well Large holes drilled in wall Pipes & cable are routed Three out of six units are positioned Finish date early May, critical for operation of Linde plant 3

False floor All done All levelling and alignment done Problem with height mentioned last month was false alarm Mechanically will be ready for spectrometer in July Rolling platform base is installed and levelled Ready for use 25 th May 4

Electrical work Locally-resident electrical contractor, supervised by DL staff has been employed –Saves time, travelling costs, but –He is overloaded! Good progress has been made with electrical services integration, mundane, but vitally important All layout drawings and specifications are done and approved Only a few minor unknowns Now we just have to find a way to install it all in time We are ready to open discussion with RAL Ops board for 2MVA transformer upgrade 5

AFC & Diffuser Technical problems with coil former for AFC are solved –Agreed that Tesla can buy forgings, but not for AFC #3 –Cost increase of £15K and schedule slip to February 2010 –AFC #2 still follows six months afterwards –Is currently the critical path for MICE Step IV Diffuser –In final stages at Oxford –Many problems with air operated motors –Plausible mechanical fixes now in progress –Likely we get it now on similar timescale as spectrometer solenoid 6

Project control & Staffing issues Problem: PM and budget-holder are overloaded Wish to parcel up things like progress reporting, earned value analysis, financial reporting, etc into a job for someone: Spoke to Neville Snodgrass, wrote job spec Approached ISIS, EID (RAL and DL), but no joy Useful contact made with ATC – Andy will follow up But we need to pay for about 0.75FTE Two university design staff (IC & Oxford) will be integrated in the RAL design group to address shortage there Sofia has offered technician help, which is very welcome, but they won’t be ‘free’ – just starting to explore now 7

Worries & problems In general the integration work is gong very well, but: –The electrical work is seriously understaffed –We now have a stack up of in-series jobs –A very noticeable delay on several jobs –At this rate we will NOT do the PPS in time –And the electrical work for steps II & III is at risk Although optimistic about the substation upgrade, we do not know yet where the money is coming from 8
