 Chapter 2 Section 2  The settling of the new world

 Called the Conquistador because he conquered the Aztecs and their leader Montezuma at Tenochtitlan.

 Conquered the Incas and their leader Atahualpa in Peru

 Introduced the slave trade from Africa to the Spanish in their new world colonies

 Founded Quebec

 Canoed down the Mississippi River for France and named the land Louisiana after King Louis of France

 New Netherland- The Dutch purchased the island of Manhattan from a Native American group called the Wappinger. This settlement became the only main Dutch colony in the Americas and was located along the Hudson River.  The main city of New Netherland was named New Amsterdam. Now it’s “The city so nice, they named it twice!”

 Jamestown Colony-1607 colony in Virginia that became the first permanent settlement in the US.  Pilgrims-English settlers at Plymouth Colony looking for religious freedom. Captain John Smith, Pocahantas  French and Indian War- British-French conflict over the British settling on French claimed soil.
