2 Religious Rivalries Roman Catholics were the first to arrive in the New World They were the only Christian church in Europe at the time Martin Luther and the Reformation: 1517- German priest Martin Luther nailed a list of complaints on the door of a Catholic Church The complaints included: questioning the power and authority of church leaders and the Pope This brought Reformation to the Catholic Church Led to a new form of Christianity called Protestantism (doesn’t accept Pope’s leadership) and conflict for European countries

3 Religious Rivalry in Europe
1533 England left Catholicism and became Protestant Spain gets mad and attacks England with an armada but English ships are too quick – England wins and Spain no longer controls the seas

4 Religious Rivalries in the Americas
Catholics Spain in SW and SE France in NE Protestant Dutch/English on Atlantic coast between French/Spanish settlements

5 Search for the NW Passage
Northwest Passage – direct water route through the Americas England sent John Cabot but probably found Newfoundland France sent Giovanni de Verrazano but sailed Nova Scotia down to the Carolinas Frenchman Jacques Carter sailed up St. Lawrence River and found Montreal Netherlands sent Henry Hudson sailed up Hudson River but turned back 2nd attempt he founded Hudson Bay

6 French and Dutch Settlements
French interests – fish/furs for trade with Native Americans 1633 New France became a royal colony Exploring the Mississippi River 1670s Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette traveled the Mississippi River by canoe 1682 Robert Cavalier de La Salle claimed Louisiana for France

7 New France and New Netherland
Along St. Lawrence River Tenant farmers were used Tenant farmers paid rent and worked for their landlord for a set period each year French and Natives got along because there was no threat to either party New Netherland 1621 Dutch created Dutch West India Company to run trade between Americas and Africa New Amsterdam built on Manhattan Island
