2 The First Colonies 1) It became clear that North America would not yield vast treasure nor a Northwest Passage, a water route to Asia through present-day Canada 2)  In the early 1600’s the English developed two settlements along the eastern coast of North America. These British southern colonies consisted of Maryland, Virginia, Carolinas, and Georgia.

3 The First Colonies 3)Jamestown was the colony established in Virginia in 4) What group of English settlers arrived in 1620 and settled the Plymouth colony? What were they later known as? The Puritans arrived in 1620 and later became known as the Pilgrims.

6 The Growth of the English Colonies
9) By the 1600’s, most of the settlers arriving in North America came from England. Of these many were indentured servants, poor immigrants who paid for passage by agreeing to work for a period of time. 10) Virginia became the first economic success story in the colonies because its rich soil was perfect for crops. 11) List two things that were important to New England’s economy: fish, shipbuilding, trade 12) List two things that the Middle Atlantic colonies had that helped with their economy: soil, water, gentle climate, agriculture, lumber, shipbuilding, trade 13) List two crops the Southern colonies grew: tobacco, rice, indigo, cotton
