Los Complementos Indirectos (Indirect Objects)

The indirect object pronoun tells to or for whom the action of the verb is performed. I give the book to him. Felipe writes a letter to me. We send them the money. I loan you my car.

Los complementos indirectos SingularPlural me – to/for menos – to/for us te – to/for youos – to/for you (all) le – to/for him, her,les – to/for them, you it, you

La colocación (placement) de los complementos indirectos 1. BEFORE the conjugated verb (Enfrente del verbo conjugado) Paco gives me the money. Paco me da el dinero. Indirecto verbo conjugado I loan you the car. Te presto el coche.

2. Attached to the infinitive (with helping verb + infinitive) (Colocado al infinitivo) I want to buy you a ticket. Deseo comprarte indirecto un boleto. infinitivo Marco has to write us a letter. Marco tiene que escribirnos una carta.

3. Attached to the present participle (ando/iendo) (Colocado al fin del participio presente) (when using the present progressive tense) You are reading the book to me. Estás leyéndome indirecto el libro. participio Marta is buying us ice cream. Marta está comprándonos el helado.

Note: When an indirect object pronoun is attached to the present participle, an accent mark is placed on the a of ando and the e of iendo. Estás mandándome la tarjeta. Estoy escribiéndote una carta. 21

Since “LE” and “LES” mean more than one thing, it may be necessary to clarify them with prepositional pronouns. Yo le escribo una carta. “Who” is le???

The possible translations for the previous sentence are: I write a letter to him. I write a letter to her. I write a letter to you. I write a letter to it.

Yo le escribo una carta a ella. Adding the prepositional pronoun (a ella) at the end of the sentence, CLARIFIES the indirect object pronoun. Now we know who “le” refers to!

The Prepositional Pronouns The prepositional pronouns are used to CLARIFY or ADD EMPHASIS to the indirect object pronoun. They must be used with a preposition: a, por, para, de, cerca de, detrás de

preposition: mínosotros(as) tivosotros(as) élellos ellaellas Ud.Uds.

Escribir al español, usando los complementos indirectos. 1. I gave the book to him. Le di el libro (a él). 2. Mom is going to buy her dress. Mamá va a comprarle el vestido (para ella). 3. They have to tell the truth to us. Tienen que decirnos la verdad.
